Work Diary:
I took the role of the concept artist during the creation of our independent game called 'Cataclysm'.
My primary role in the creation of our game Cataclysm is the games artist, it's my job to create the character and map design for the game levels and begin to turn them into usable graphics. I also took on the secondary role of producer when our producer was unable to attend lessons. I also helped with the code as well as some of the production roles.
Throughout the project I talked with the games producer and coder about the map design, showing them what I had done and seeing if it worked with the original concepts and the way the coder was writing up the game. I mainly conversed with the coder about the map design, constantly sending them updated versions of the map so they could use it and adjust the level to the map.
September 19th 2018
Once we made a group we assigned ourselves with job roles, Nadia took on the role of the producer, Jack is the coder, Ben is the designer and I am the game artist.
Nadia created a Trello page to help us keep track of what work we had and deadlines. We all began adding different jobs we had to do and deciding on deadlines.
September 26th
As a group we had to come up with two possible ideas we could make into a game and create a brief plot summary and a mood board for each idea.
October 3rd
Our next job was to create further develop the ideas we had by going more in depth about the game by looking into games with a similar look and mechanic to what we are going for and talking about how they fit with our game.
October 10th
After developing the two ideas to get a good idea of plot and game play we used SWOT method (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) We ended up choosing the first game which is a side-scroller horror and adventure game we then had to write out a list of pros and cons to choosing that idea.
October 17th
We had to write a MoSCoW (Must haves, Should haves, Would haves, Could haves) to help us decide on what is a necessity for our game and what we could afford to loose if we didn't have enough time.
October 31st
We began to create a treatment for the game. Nadia split us up and gave us all different sections to do to help get the work done quicker.
I ended up doing the Background and Environment visuals slide as well as the character profile slides.
November 7th
I began drawing out sketches for the background of our game.
November 14th
I made some character designs for the game. Me and Nadia decided on the names and traits of the characters and she wrote a description for each of the characters.

November 21st
I began drawing the map on photoshop for final use in the game.
I hit a slight problem because the drawings always came out darker on the mac screens than they did on the windows PC's.
November 28th
I finished the house background and began drawing the rest of the map to go with it.
December 12th
I began drawing the map and adding extra details.
(Add pictures of the old map idk where they are but find them)
January 9th
Part way through the map creation I looked at it and began to see that the proportions didn't match up so i had to start over again and I am much happier with this map over the old one.
January 16th
I began making textures and adding them to the map. So now the map had a grass texture.
January 20th
I created a wooden log png that the character has to jump over to help the player learn the mechanics of the game.
January 23rd
I finished the grass texture over the map and began creating a path and water texture to add.
February 6th
I began working on the water and path.
February 13th
I sent Jack a PNG of what I had of the map so far so he could make a rough game and he said the map was too 3D and he wouldn't be able to make a 2D character look like it was moving along it.
I helped Jack to move the character along the path giving it a 3D illusion using invisible walls.
February 27th
I created a final path texture and began slowly adding it to the map.
March 6th
I began to add a background colour to make it match the sky of the house drawing. I also added in trees down the small hill to make it look less bare.
It is annoying because the screen makes the map look a lot darker so I will have to make a filter to brighten it up.
March 13th
I began the background, I added clouds and a background island for extra detail and effect.
March 20th
I finished the path after discussing with Jack if it was an ok route for the character to walk. I also had to replace the path at the house because it was a different colour.

April 3rd
I helped Ben animate his bird design for the game so it looks like it's flying.
I began designing a few gates and fences to add around the map to make it more interactive and give the player more to see and do.
April 29th
I made an electric fence obstacle to add to the map which will be used as an interactive object for the character
May 1st
Today i created a door for the electric fence and made a png of the door open so the character can walk through
I finished the background island for the game map.

May 10th
I finished the small rocky hill at the start of the map

Grass texture:
January 20th
I created a wooden log png that the character has to jump over to help the player learn the mechanics of the game.
January 23rd
I finished the grass texture over the map and began creating a path and water texture to add.
February 6th
I began working on the water and path.
Me and Nadia agreed I should work on the map visuals whilst others worked on the character animations. I created some animation references for the characters if the others wanted to use them.
February 13th
I sent Jack a PNG of what I had of the map so far so he could make a rough game and he said the map was too 3D and he wouldn't be able to make a 2D character look like it was moving along it.
